What I Learned from a Bear, a Moose, and an Astronaut
Hello Reader, Living on our Vermont farm, I’m surrounded by moments that remind me how precious this planet is. Over the years, I’ve watched a young moose quietly standing in our lower yard, a snapping turtle mama searching for a safe place to lay her eggs (we gently guided her away from the tractor path), and wild turkeys strutting across the fields. Every day brings something new: rabbits hopping by, geese flying overhead, a young bear helping himself to blueberries, or a deer mama trotting past with her twin fawns. Even the so‑called “weeds” — like plantain growing in our lawn — offer gifts, ready to draw the sting from a bug bite. This is my normal. But I know it’s not the reality for most people. I grew up in New York City and later lived in Boston and its suburbs — worlds away from the farms, wild beauty, and health‑first living I cherish in Vermont. Looking back, I see how easy it is to lose that connection. Astronaut Ron Garan had a similar realization from a very different vantage point: 178 days aboard the International Space Station. Gazing down at Earth’s breathtakingly thin atmosphere, he called out what he saw as “the big lie” — the illusion that the economy comes first. The truth? The order must be Planet → Society → Economy. Because if the planet doesn’t thrive, neither can we.
